Corrective Exercise is a more holistic approach to exercise that incorporates some aspects of physical therapy with personal training. Corrective exercise is more than just personal training as it incorporates the right exercises for your posture, activity level and personal health history.
How Does Corrective Exercise Help You?
In everyday life, various activities we do gradually create muscle imbalances in our bodies. Muscle imbalances is a term used to describe the condition of having some muscles overly active or tight and others underactive or weak. Muscle imbalances, if not corrected, lead to discomfort, pain and predispose a person to injury. Whether you sleep on one side, sit for long periods of time, work at a desk for hours on end or participate an activity requiring repetitive movement, such as a skilled labor (painting, contracting) or sports like dance, tennis and golf, our bodies slowly develop strengths and weaknesses that eventually lead to asymmetry in our posture and movement. These posture and movement imbalances can lead to unnecessary wear and tear on our muscles and joints and make us more susceptible to chronic pain and injuries.
The goal of Corrective Exercise is to identify both posture and movement imbalances and joint limitations and develop a program to correct them. The focus is on movements designed to create balance, stability and mobility in areas that are not functioning properly. The end result is that you feel better, move better and do what you love to do better!
What is a Corrective Exercise Specialist?
A Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) is a health care professional who helps you relieve everyday muscle aches and pains to improve your ability to move and feel better. A CES also creates a corrective exercise program to create balance, stability and mobility in areas that are not functioning properly. This process helps to strengthen your body both overcome a previous injury and decrease your risk for future injuries so that you can do what’s important to you more effectively.
What Can I Expect if I Make Corrective Exercise Appointments?
1. As a CES, Dave will first interview you during a consultation to understand your background, your health history, your goals and personal preferences.
2. In visit two, Dave will conduct a movement assessment to determine which muscles are overactive and which muscles are underactive. This is critical to be sure you are doing the right exercises for your body type and fitness level. By doing the assessment, Dave can determine which muscles need more mobility, stability and strength and which muscles need more flexibility training so that your body functions more optimally in daily life.
3. After collecting assessment information and your goals, Dave can create a program for you to alleviate pain, improve flexibility and help you move more comfortably and efficiently. This will improve your ability to be more physically active whether you are young or old, competing at a high level, just learning to exercise, or anywhere in between.
Corrective exercise training is beneficial for folks of all walks of life.
TESTIMONIALS
“I met Dave at one of the most vulnerable points in my life, being devastated by a knee injury that was going to bench me for the entire season.
As a Captain for the UConn Dance Team I value attention to detail, appropriate challenges for the individual at hand, and positivity, all of which are blatantly obvious in Dave’s work through True Health Unlimited, LLC. I cannot thank Dave enough for his constant encouragement and guidance, and for helping me regain the strength to get back into the sport I love and the mindset I deserve.”
